Default GARS vs. webtemplates

Gars seems so much more flexible in the presentation options.

I've already got the wt installed, but my site won't be launching it's articles for another week or so. So now is the time to consider a change.

A couple quick questions

* does the backend support the same abilities regarding edit and view permissions as L's WTs?

* How does this integrate with vBSEO?

I don't like how WTs have to be created by an admin and then handed off to staff writers. I would much more like it if folks can create their own reviews/articles (permission based) and I can control when they are published (after editorial review of course).

Any info would be great. My PayPal accounting is bursting to buy the "right" tech for my application.

Hey Roscoe,

Ive never even looked at Logicans Web Templates so its really hard for me to comment (plus, I'm a little biased ) Therefore its really hard for me to comment on the first question regarding the same editing capabilities as Logs. I can say however that ANYTHING you can do in a thread you can do with GARS. In other words, moderation, user permissions, ratings, bbcode, attachments, searching, blahblahblahblah you can do with GARS as GARS is really just a forum manager. Under the hood, all a GARS article (or tutorial, review, etc)... is a thread, but with extra properties that are displayed differently.

vBSEO has GARS support built into it

Ill be perfectly honest. If GARS didn't impress you - I would print out the code and eat it line by line. please note this is a one time offer!

Anyhoo, check out the tutorials forum in the GARS forum. I am adding bits today and tomorrow in regards to the operation of GARS before the release tomorrow. That will give you a good idea what you can do.

Hope this helps. Happy new year.

Thanks for the response Geek. I won't make you eat your code.

Here is the one feature I really like that is the one I am most concerned with.

The editing. Say my article writer want to work on a draft. Can he edit past the edit limit (time set in admincp)? Can he go back and revise his article once his time limit for edit a post has expired?

In the "other" system, you can define editors by group and/or username, as well as view permissions by group and/or username.

We have a 20 minute limit on editing posts. Some of my article writers revise several drafts before they are ready for primetime. Can they still have this functionality?

Thanks again.

I'm implementing both on my site.

Logician's hack will be used for our custom content that just wouldn't "fit" into GARS, such as the contact us page, and a small affliliate page. We're using GARS for user submitted articles, and a new product reviews section.

I'm very impressed with both GARS so far, I think depending on your needs, you should get them both.

Thanks. The editor feature is big for me though. I don't want to have to edit articles as an admin or provide a pre-publish forum if I can help it. Just makes for more work.

And I agree, GARS is really quite slick. I may pick it up just for the tutorial layouts.

If you want to publish formalised content on your site, its the thing to go for IMO. Its a bargain too.

Geek, did I read right that GARS will be released tomorrow? Is it going to have a full readme etc?

Thats what I'm gunning for. So far so good.

As far as editing goes, its just like editing a thread. The time limit thing is irrelevant as it doesn't show the edited by message

Time limit is also something i am missing Geek. Normally users can edit their posts or threads within 12 hours in my board but i want to assign unlimited for anyone who creates a topic , is this a feature which you can put later maybe after gold release ?

Why not just set the vboptions limit for editing posts to 0?
