Unhappy Custom phrases are gone after update

Hi Geek,

could you please check the following for the next GARS Update?

I translated the whole GARS System to 1.0.1 and the update process deleted all my custom phrases which means that I now have to do all the translations again.

Can you please modify the system in this way that it changes the original phrases during the update but does not touch custom ones?

Kind regards
jluerken

According to the last release thread: Click here <---- That is a URL even though it looks like normal text

Geek is aware of the issue and asked everyone to be sure and export your custom translations before updating.

Whether or not there is a "fix" on the way or not, I have no idea. Maybe a reminder during the installation or at least in the upgrade instructions could save someone else some work in the future though.

It is always a good idea to at least scan through the release notes for any sometware that you are upgrading, especially if you are planning to use it in any type of production environment without some degree of testing on your own.

War you cannot save custom phrases of a product and install them later on again. Try it, it will not work

This issue with the phrases really sucks.

Not because it's too much work to export and reimport, hell that's easy, but because you just can't forget to do it or you'll lose days of work...

BTW Jelsoft seems to think to problem is with the coders and not with vB:

And over @ vBOrg "it shouldn't happen"...

Thats silly. IMO its because ALL phrases get DUMPED when you re-import a product and then rebuilt.
Guess its too hard for them to simply overwrite the applicible ones.

Now I think about it... Im 100% positive that they delete ALL phrases of a product when a re-import happens. If thats the case, then its a VB problem

Geek,

Thre are other hacks where this does not happen.
I just updated the "Access Permissions Based on User's Post Count" hack from vBorg and my translated phrases weren't touched.
Maybe you could take a look at that hack and see if anything's done differently, who knows.

Thanks.

Its pretty straight forward stuff, here is a typical product phrase XML:

PHP Code:
 <phrasetype name="vBulletin Settings" fieldname="vbsettings">
 <
phrase name="setting_geek_gars_forumids_desc"><![CDATA[Lookdont mess with this unless you are told by secret service agents eating bannanasBasically its a quick hint for GARS to spawn itself which saves a query to the datastore on non GARS pagesThis value is fed by the GARS Settings admincp pageTweak it thereGoodbye!]]></phrase>
 <
phrase name="setting_geek_gars_forumids_title"><![CDATA[Forum ID Hint]]></phrase>
 <
phrase name="settinggroup_geek_gars_group"><![CDATA[GARS]]></phrase>
 </
phrasetype
There is no setting for language, storage method, persistance... anything really. Therefore Im not sure where to start looking.
