Default Best Way to Break Pages in 100 Page Article

Hi all

As a newbie with very little experience, may I ask just a little, hopefully not too annoying, question? I have installed GARS 1.0.1 and it is working fine. Really looks fantastic, thanks guys. Now, I want to upload loads of pages from a static site I built. There are some 100 pages. I got the first page done as an article and it looks just great. But now I am stumped.

When I tried to insert a page break using BB code in the article, the code simply showed up in the article as text. Silly me. So, must I now feed in the other pages separately as new articles or can I create pagebreaks in the one article and just build the lot into a single article. Essentially, must I insert former html pages as copied text into a separate article for each page or can I have all 100 pages in a single article which breaks into a hundred separate pages? If I can do the latter, would anyone here be kind enough to explain the method of doing it please?

Sorry if this seems a stupid question but I'm an old timer and not able to write php or even html. I set up my static site using Dreamweaver 8 (which did it all for me really but cost a bomb).

Regards

Youre most liekly using a wysiwyg editor and its putting formatting tags around your [break] bbcode.

Highlight the [break] code and click

See if that helps.

Let me know how your 100 page thing goes. Thats a pretty heavy sized article for gars to handle

Thank you Geek, my friend. I will give that a try.

Yes, I realise it's a big ask but I'm going to see how it goes. Guess I could always split the article into its natural chapters (about 5 or 6) if it's too much to put into just one.

Certainly, I will let you know how I get on. I'm using the now outdated version. Figure I must get used to that before trying your new version. May I just say that the product is worth every penny I paid for it and then some. Superb. Can't believe some peeps complaining about a modest price increase. You have done a great job and deserve to reap the rewards for your labour. Well done.

Thumbs up Thanks Geek

Thank you Geek. Believe it or not, the problem was not the WYSIWYG editor but the way I read your manual. I thought the BB code had a space between the parentheses and the word break, thus: [ break ]. When I looked again at your suggestion above after trying the fix without success, I noticed that you did not include a space. So I typed in: [break] and ... voila! Beautiful! Not only a nice page break but all the necessary on each page for future navigation. What a dream come true.

Now, just 2 more little questions and I can get on with those 100 pages.

1. I have inserted images into the text but the text does not wrap around the images. Rather it sits between the words or paras and looks daft. How do I wrap text around images please?

[Incidentally, Geek, it's easier to insert images using GARS than it was using Dreamweaver 8; mainly because it was necessary in DW8 to set up a table in which to fix an image. And any changes to the text required repositioning of the image tables. No such difficulty with GARS. ]

2. As you can see above, there is here a 'Justify' button. Not one on my editor at present. No problem. Happy to manually edit. Do I just type: [ justify ] no spaces of course , at beginning and [ /justify ] at end of the text I want to justify?

If you can help me out with these two little probs, I think I have the whole thing hacked now to my satisfaction. Once I see what happens with the many pages (will take me some time to finish that task) I will get back to you to let you know how GARS handles such a very large article - almost a book really. I am beginning to think there is nothing I need that GARS can't do.

I am just so pleased that a friend pointed me to this site. I am thinking about installing a photograph gallery and some links software once I get my forums sorted out. Are your products in those areas as relatively simple for a newbie to use as GARS has been?

Best wishes and, again, many thanks for your kind assistance, Geek.

The justify bbcode is one from vbulletin.org however gars 2.0 justifies the text by default.

I cant really say much about the images - vB does all the text and image rendering

To get text to wrap around an image in your articles you will need to create a custom bbcode tag (you can do this in your admincp)

This is the one that I am currently using, though after looking at it I will probably try and update it to use span tags instead of a table. (it still works perfectly as is)

Title: Image Text Wrap

Tag: wrap

Replacement:
<table border="0" align="{option}" valign="top">
<tr>
<td><img src="{param}" border="0" align="{option}" /></td>
</tr>
</table>

Example: [wrap="left"]http://www.thevbgeek.com/images/element/misc/logo_blue.gif[/wrap]

Use Option: {check 'Yes'}

Button Image: {see first attachment}

You can then insert an image into an article and specify through the option whether the image will be left or right justified. The text will wrap around the image automatically (see attached image for an example.) Hope that helps.

The only issue I would have with that would be that my users (for example) would then have two seperate wrap-tag functions that they would have available to them. I would think that leaving it as an optional addistion as a custom bbcode through the admin panel would be the best route. At the very least, a way to disable it for those of use that are already using something like it would be good to have.

If I do it - it will be as an option that you would have to enable.
