Warning: All Geek Scripts and vB 4.0

Warning: All the Geek Scripts and vB 4.0 are not compatible. Tests will be done as soon as possible, around the time of the vB 4.0 Gold release, to see what needs to change to make the Geek Scripts compatible with vB 4.0 if possible. Due to new vB 4.0 features, it may be the case that certain Geek Scripts get discontinued.

If you upgrade to vB 4.0, you will break all the Geek Scripts, so if you are going to upgrade, turn off all the Geek Scripts by disabling the product via the ACP and do not turn them on again until after a vB 4.0 compatible version is released. There is no set time frame, but it will be as soon as it gets done.

Support for the Geek Scripts on vB 4.0 will not be offered until after a vB 4.0 compatible version of the Geek Scripts is released. At that time, the determination as to whether any Geek Script is discontinued will be made, so it may be the case that not all the Geek Scripts become compatible.

Please do not repeatedly ask whether it is done yet. What is planned is to get this done as soon as possible, and given that the templates need a redo, and code will likely need to be changed, this is not going to be a half day job.

Thanks

Thanks for the info Morgan.

I was waiting for it for a few months.

I like to put my opinion, maybe is irrelevant but, I'm still like to.

I have two scripts GARS & GAB
Also a long time ago I buy vBDynamics Multiple Instances, but when I find GARS, I simple love it. As far I know a lot of users migrate between GARS - vBDyn. With the Articles option from vBull 4, I think you will think on discontinued GARS.

I say, give it a try, as far I see the vBull 4 Articles will be for the Site area, looks cool, but the vbull sub-forums, looks awesome with GARS.

GARS is a unique script, in fact maybe I'll resist to upgrade to vBull 4 because GARS make some parts of my forum unique, I love it, my users like it.

GAB looks pretty useful, and the vBull Ads systems suxs so I don't think is on the scripts Blacklist.

The other scripts, I wait to buy them until the next update or I'll have more things to worry.

Wherever the decision you guys make, you have a long hours of hard work coming, and I think we really appreciated it.

Thanks and best regards!!!

I hope that most of the vb geek products will be transformed to work with vb4.

I also have both Vba Dynamics and GARS. Dynamics is the most powerful,
but GARS is the definitely the most beautiful (and best) script.

How about 1 day? :D

I would be VERY sad to see GARS go away..

Morgan, what is your thought on GARS as it stands with the features of vb4? Another member did make a point that vb4 will have their own way of handling articles I believe so I just wanted your take on it minus the modifying it would take to get it compatible and what not.

Webmist 10-17-2009 10:17 PM

I will be pre-ordering but won't upgrade for just this reason. I want to see what mods I have installed will upgrade before I install vb4.

Helmut71 10-20-2009 04:21 AM

@Morgan: There will be a template-merge for eays transfering the vb2 templates into vb4, have a look at: http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/showthread.php?t=6828

This might be of interest for you!

Just wanted to add a voice on the pro vb4 GARS side... The vB4 Articles in *NO* way replaces the core functionality of GARS. GARS is so much more flexible, and provides admins with the ability to hand tailor individual forums to fill needs that could never be addressed via the vB 4 CMS functionality. GARS, GAL and GAB are all still highly relevant and useful moving into vb4, but I'd place GARS at the top of the list for conversion ;).

Along with Photoplog (leveraging the upload functionality and asset sharing capabilities of vb4 would make 'plog AWESOME!), GARS is the primary thing that we'll be waiting for before even considering upgrading to vb4.

As said above GARS is the only thing that will stop me jumping straight into vb4 (despite having the publishing suite ordered)

Same here on both accounts. I use GARS as a literature repository and would loathe downgrading to a stripped-down article system.

BobdeBilder 11-08-2009 09:25 AM

Hi Morgan .. I do believe a number of vB users are not planning to upgrade further than 3.8

I don't think so. Most of the vb users will upgrade tuntil spring 2010. Why shouldn't they?

lthanos 11-15-2009 02:03 PM

Are there any news or thoughts concerning the future of GARS and GAL in vb4? :)

Loremaster 11-16-2009 12:38 PM

I would like to add my voice in support of the GARS system. It is amazing and I would love to see it updated to vb4 as I would hate to let it go.

because of the plugins they use and that their forums work for them now

many vB users are plain pissed with vB and will not upgrade

so what I am saying is NOT that GARS shouldn't be upgraded to vB4 but that, there will be quite a number who do not progress further than 3.8

Vessalius 12-03-2009 10:03 AM

God I hope this goes to vb 4.0!

MotMann 12-06-2009 10:04 AM

Im still waiting for your skripts for vB 4 also :)

lthanos 12-07-2009 06:43 AM

Can we get an update if any/all of the scripts are into consideration to be ported to vb4? If it's certain that some vbgeek scripts will not be ported, we should start looking for alternatives.

milsirhc 12-21-2009 11:21 PM

VB 4 is now gold.. I really hope GARS get upgraded to work with VB4.

MrD 12-22-2009 07:50 AM

Hi Morgan, please could you give us an information what scripts do you plan to upgrade and in what timeframe? I know you're always busy but I think we deserve an answer, thank you.

I agree, else everyone is just waiting for something that might not happen at all.

Morgan, can you pls let us know? Thanks.

AWS 12-30-2009 06:40 PM

While the article and review system is a great addon to a vb3 site it is now a script which should be discontinued. The new CMS is actually an article system and not a true CMS. It is an excellent replacement for GARS. Having GARS and the CMS installed is redundant.

OTOH if you only plan to install the forum then GARS would make a nice replacement for the built in vbulletin article system.

YaGi 12-31-2009 05:27 AM

Sorry AWS, I'm not concur with you.

The CMS of vBulletin looks to me like a Simple Portal, Maybe with a few mods could made the same as GARS. But "with a few MODS".

The CMS is just another stuff we can use, same as vBDynamics. But like I said on my previous post GARS is pretty unique, and in my site have an Important role, same as vBDyn. And yes, I buy the vBull 4 Publishing Suit, but I don't have plans to migrate until a few months. Meanwhile The Geek could surprise us.

Lighting90 01-07-2010 03:25 PM

Looking forward to Gars been rewritten for vB4, (can only guess it will be a lot of work for you...)

Just hope you enjoy writing it as much as we enjoy using it.... :)

As I can see it requires a fair bit of work, we would not deem it unreasonable to pay an addtional fee for the upgrade.

Sure, but we haven't heard back from Morgan for a long time now. I seriously doubt if any of these products will be ported to vb4.

I think we could at least get a feedback as to IF any of geek products are planned to be upgraded or not.

minstrel 01-10-2010 07:10 AM

Agree. Some updates from time to time would be nice in the name of "customer service". And some indication of whether various products are even on the list for updates.

I don't care about GARS any more, frankly.

Personally, I would like a GAL update and perhaps a GAZ update. GARS can die.

Or better no script should die, don't you think?

lthanos 01-11-2010 03:41 PM

We cannot tell the developer what to do, obviously.

But at least we could get an indication or even some thoughts regarding the possibility of the scripts in v4.

For example for me the only thing I really care is GAL, because I don't know any other scripts like this to replace it. I can replace GAZ with another newsletter, and GARS with default CMS functionality and/or a couple of addon mods. But GAL for the moment is the only thing I have no idea how to replace.

minstrel 01-11-2010 04:39 PM

I think that's the point: For at least some of these scripts, there are other alternatives. If we knew that certain scripts would not be updated or were not priorities, I think we'd be looking more vigorously for alternatives.

Morgan, some sort of update would be a reasonable courtesy. Otherwise, I think we're all going to have to assume that these scripts have been abandoned - for the second time. Not a very good business model at all.

Gold Release and Time Frame

Hello,

I very much like the scripts GAB + GAL and because now also the GOLD Version for Germany is out, it would be interesting for me too, what the Plans are for the Update so that GAB + GAL will be compatible to VB4.

So it would be nice Morgan if you can tell the Users here that the plans for a Update will be and how the timeframe will looks like?

Thank you very much for your answer.

Greetings out of Germany
Hans
