Does GARS retroactively add custom fields?

I feel a bit of a fool asking this, because it seems like GARS can do what I need and a whole lot more, but I want to make sure.

Here's the thing: I have a vB community based on city. In other words, forum structure like this:

City1
- dining
- entertainment
City2
- dining
- entertainment
.
.
.
City7
- dining
- entertainment

you get the idea. What I want to do is, reorganize my forums like this:

Dining
Entertainment

And then let the user select a city via a dropdown, if their post is city-specific, and then let people search for dining posts in their city.

Question1: Will GARS do this?
Question2: Will GARS retroactively add these custom fields (city dropdowns) to my existing posts, so that before I combine them, I can go through and manually select the city?

I hope this makes sense. I just need to add custom searchable fields, retroactively, to my forum posts.

Thanks!

If I understand you correctly it wont be a problem. The only part it may not work is in filling in values for previous posts. In other words, you can add a new custom field to a type that is assigned to a forum that contains threads, however doing so will not 'automatically' fill in the values as you may be wanting. Saying that - its not too hard to mass update then via phpmyadmin or something similar :)

Thanks for the reply. I don't mind going back and assigning values.

I'm just having difficulty understanding exactly what the GARS system does. I just need an extra field or two in every thread, so a user can tell other users what city their post applies to, and then people can filter to just things relevant to their city.

After reading the forums for a couple of days, it seems that GARS will do that, and a whole lot more. Maybe I am overthinking it?
