new product suggestion

possible name: Geek Auto Affiliate

its similar to autolinker however instead of turning words into links, it would look at the url and add a another url before it.

lets explain, often affliates like tradedoubler and others all deep linking to the affliates you belong to

e.g. http://www.tradedoubler.com/affliateid=play.com&programid=6&url=http://www.play.com/product.php?id=1

so after the url= is the url a user might/will post, before that is the link that makes it an affiliate link.

so the script would search for e.g.

http://play.com http://www.play.com/product.php?id=5

and add

http://www.tradedoubler.com/affliateid=play.com&programid=6&url= before it

turning it into

http://www.tradedoubler.com/affliateid=play.com&programid=6&url=http://www.play.com/product.php?id=5

leaving the text alone, I think this would be an excellent product.

The Geek 10-11-2005 09:53 PM

Huh. Basically you are saying:

take any URL with www.amazon.com and change it to www.mylink.com/affiliate=www.amazon.com

Or am I screwed up there?

If not, that would be simple.

Sniper 10-11-2005 10:03 PM

not quite, the goal is to turn the non-affiliated link into a affiliated link.

e.g. the script would have this is the data base

name: micro direct
url to affiliate: www.microdirect.com
affiliate url: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=21759&a=1058515&g=871679&url=

now when a user comes and post a link to http://www.microdirect.co.uk the script would search for the url http:/www.microdirect.co.uk and turn it into this http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=21759&a=1058515&g=871679=http://www.microdirect.co.uk

the url to affiliate could even be http://www.microdirect.co.uk/products.php?p_id=343

so with the script it would look like this http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=21759&a=1058515&g=871679&url=http://www.microdirect.co.uk/products.php?p_id=343

you could apply this to so many other affiliates, you have to remember the affiliate url is different for each company.

let me know if you get what I mean

so it looks for a URL and adds a certain URL before it defined by the admin.

What if the link in question already has an affiliate part added to it?

The Geek 10-12-2005 07:11 AM

I think I got ya. It wouldnt really be that hard as a slight ammend/addition to GAL.

Essentailly instead of searching for a keyword, it would search for a URL.
Simple really.

Dont know when I could get to it though!

Sniper 10-12-2005 10:58 AM

if it allready has a affiliate link to it then you just remove it and the script would add it for you.

In most cases you have setup a system for them to affiliate the link for, otherwise you will have to get your mods to affiliate every link.

Bad Bunny 10-12-2005 01:40 PM

Yeah, I was just curious how the system would react if someone place their own affiliate link. Seems a bit complex to strip unwanted affiliate links and replace them with yours.

The Geek 10-12-2005 03:29 PM

I dont think it would be too hard.

Basically, the parser would be searching for href="http://www.keyurl
And simply insert
href="DEFINED_REPLACEMENThttp://www.keyurl

So if there was already an affiliate there, it wouldnt have a match.

Anyhooo - thats how I envisioned it from the post. Maybe im wrong.

Sniper 10-12-2005 03:57 PM

correct, true if there was an affiliate link there it would not match, but its easier to delete the already affiliate link part and let the script add your affiliate.

to begin with user tend not post affiliated links, so you have to get mods to affiliate those links by editing them.

I hope you add this feature soon :)

I think you're spot on Sam. I think a lot of bigger vB's would pay for a working product. Lots of sites [e.g. www.thedvdforums.com] have workarounds in place, but in the form of users having to input their links already affiliated via a convertor. Users who do not have links affiliated have threads amended by the staff. It would be a huge time saver! Using a product, they'd also never have to go back and edit all old links if the affiliate changed. ;)
