Overview

An Issue generates a cached snapshot of your forum. The layout and data contained in the snapshot are determined by the modules in the Issues module set when the snapshot is created (or regenerated). When users receive an email, what they are actually receiving is a cached Issue.

The issues section of the GAZ admincp allows you to easily manage all snapshots based on the issues newsletter.

The easiest way to think of an Issue is to use a magazine analogy. When you receive the latest Geeks Illustrated through the post, you are receiving the latest issue to Geeks Illustrated. In this analogy, Geeks Illustrated is the newsletter.

If there are multiple newsletters and issues active when a user visits newsletters.php , they will be able to view them. Optionally, if the user is in a usergroup that is allowed to Send an To Friends, then they will also be able to email the issue to another address.

Administration

Issue Admin
Issue Admin

You can access the Issue Administrator by browsing to admincp >> GAZ >> Issues. There you will see a Drop down list that allows you to filter the list by newsletter as well as a drop down list with a variety of options

Data Snapshot

This is the date and time when the snapshot of the forum data was made

Users Left

An approximate number of users left who have not received this issue, but are subscribed. The number is only an estimate as other members may have subscribed since the number was generated.

Sent

This is the status of the current issue.

HTML

The approximate number of users that will receive an HTML version of this issue.

Tracked

This is an estimate of how many members have read their HTML issue. The newsletter this issue belongs to must have the Track HTML setting on. Please read more about limitations with this feature here.

Edit

You can edit the settings for any issue by either clicking on the name of the issue or by selecting edit from the drop down list

Preview last HTML/Text issue

This option is only available if this issue has been generated. Selecting this option from the drop down list will open a new window showing you an exact preview of the HTML or Plain Text issue.

Resend All/Continue/Send

This option is only available if this newsletter has generated an issue. These options allow you to manually start sending issues out to subscribed members.

Reset Data

This option will re-cache the layout and data for this issue. Please note that it will re-cache it with a start date of the time you choose this option. In other words, if you reset the data on an issue that was originally cached a month ago, the new data will be from todays date... not a month ago!

Refresh Layout

This option will re-cache the layout only using the existing data cache. This is useful if you have tweaked the style or moved modules about. Note that if you have added modules that do not cache data (i.e. the text module) then they will appear in the new layout. If you add modules that cache data (i.e. the thread list module) then they will not have any data to display.

Reset Sent Counter

This option will reset the sent counter back to Zero.

Copy

This option will make a copy of the issue (but it will not copy the cache).

Delete

Will permanently delete this Issue.

Settings

The following settings are accessed by editing an issue in the Issue Administrator above.

Issue Settings
Issue Settings

Title

The value is the title of the issue (i.e. Whats happening on myforum.com). The Issue ID is automatically created and appended to the title so that the above title would look like Whats happening on myforum.com #14.

Newsletter

This is the Newsletter that the issue belongs to.

Module set

This is the module set that the issue uses when formatting content. Please note that this setting only affects NEW issues created or re-cached.

Active

If this setting is No, then users will not be able to browse this issue nor will issues be automatically sent.

Start Date

This is the date that the modules will work from when generating data. Note that this setting is only valid when generating the cache and you can not set it retroactively.

HTML/BBcode/Plain Text

This text is passed on to certain modules the issue is created. They are used in the info module and are designed to generate unique messages for each issue (or a generic one!). If Plain Text is left empty, the HTML/BBcode text will be used.

Data Generated

This is the date and time that the data was generated (if applicable).

Preview Issue

This option displays an HTML or Plain Text version of the issue

Refresh Layout

This option will re-cache the layout only using the existing data cache. This is useful if you have tweaked the style or moved modules about. Note that if you have added modules that do not cache data (i.e. the text module) then they will appear in the new layout. If you add modules that cache data (i.e. the thread list module) then they will not have any data to display.

Generate New Data

This option will re-cache the layout and data for this issue. Please note that it will re-cache it with a start date of the time you choose this option. In other words, if you reset the data on an issue that was originally cached a month ago, the new data will be from todays date... not a month ago!
