Link Directory for GARS 2.1.8m (Demo It (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51))

Turn a forum into a link directory, where your members can make comments about a website and enter a URL to said website, whereby if a screenshot of that website exists, it will automatically appear as a thumbnail. If no screenshot is available, a default image will appear. See this GARS add-on in action here (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51).

For those that are upgrading to this version, please note that a new setting for the thumbnail extension has been added. Check the README file for further details. Also, please note that this add-on is not supported, but you may find answers in the previous version's release thread here (http://www.thevbgeek.com/showthread.php?t=1969).

Special thanks to http://www.m-software.de/ for providing free private or commercial use. http://www.thevbgeek.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

GARS 2.1.8m and up is the required version for this add-on. PHP settings required:

allow_url_fopen = on
safe_mode = off

Not every host allows those PHP settings.

PS: Folks, please do not start sending PMs to me with login information unless asked to do so. This add-on is not marked as supported.

For forum prefixes and the link directory see http://www.thevbgeek.com/showthread.php?t=4448

For alternative thumb service providers see http://www.thevbgeek.com/showpost.php?p=22712&postcount=373

The link button is missing on the link posts. Also is on forumdisplay the small link button http://www.mc-escort.com/escort-forum/images/misc/exlink.gifleft beside the title gone.

Is your GARS images directory writable? Did you FTP the default.jpg image into the GARS /images/misc directory?

Hiya,

Its all working great apart from one little thing!

Author can post ratings Yes
Author rate as a member? Yes
Tick to submit ratings Yes
Users can post ratings Yes
Users can only rate when making a reply? No
Allow users to change their ratings Yes
Show users ratings in their replies Yes

When I submit a link, and then go to rate it from the thread, once I click "Rate Now" the box scrolls back up and it dosent save the ratings.

Yes and yes.
I am doing a total re-install over the next day or two (locally first, on one of our dev boxes) and I'll see how it behaves in a 'naked' environment.
I'm sad as we have used this great GARS add-on since it came out, and it's very popular.

Error2 means that there is no file or the file has no size. What thumb service are you using? Try the following:

Please be patient while things get worked out. There are a number of add-ons that need to be checked, four more scripts to get out, bugs to fix, and support questions to answers.

Go to http://www.thevbgeek.com/glic.php and re-download GARS, and then FTP those two files, overwriting the ones on the server. Not sure it'll fix your issue, but it's worth a shot.

Morgan
01-07-2008, 04:39 AM
The problem is htaccess. vB cannot process the file because of it, but instead encounters a 401 status code. I made four edits to the vB class_upload.php file to work around htaccess, but it is not ideal because your htaccess username and password are passed to the PHP fopen function. The original vB class_upload.php file was renamed to the class_upload_orig.php file. The class_upload.php file contains the four edits. Use at your own risk, but if you change the snap settings, your htaccess username or password, your domain name, your forum directory name, the server /tmp directory, or possibly something else, it will again not work.

cyberbob73

Morgan
01-07-2008, 05:02 AM
Thanks, and yes, if you upgrade to vB 3.7 it will again not work, but the four edits are hopefully the same edits that would be needed, and if so, it shouldn't be a big problem. Without htaccess it should work, but with htaccess the edts are needed. Again, use at your own risk. Well, off for the night, Zzz Zzz time here.

Not to sound like a complete nub here. Just downloaded installed followed all directions.. Everything is set as above:
* http://www.m-software.de/screenshot/Screenshot.png?url=

And my GARS settings are working (ss1)

Yet when I go to add a link: (ss2)

How can i get uploads of headers working?

Look at the HTML source of this (http://www.thevbgeek.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=899&d=1200023663) page and see what link is in the IMG tag contained in the current image block.

Matty

Morgan
01-11-2008, 04:44 AM
Is the 'path to image' set to types/misc/default.jpg under the link directory type?

Matty
01-11-2008, 10:45 AM
I have tried with
geek/gars/images/types/misc/default.jpg
types/misc/default.jpg
http://mainlocaition.com/geek/gars/images/types/misc/default.jpg

Tried links again and I once again have no option to upload a header..

Morgan
01-11-2008, 02:24 PM
Adding a new link to the link directory should look like this (http://www.thevbgeek.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=51). There isn't meant to be an option to upload, as the snap.php file uses the thumb service to fetch a thumbnail for you if it exists.

Matty
01-11-2008, 03:55 PM
So in otherwords.. There is no way to get a screenshot of the webpage to haev for the link listings? Is it possible to turn the image off then?

Morgan
01-11-2008, 04:11 PM
Getting a screenshot for a link directory is what this add-on does. If the thumb service provider has a screenshot available, it gets posted; otherwise the default image appears. Try it here (http://www.thevbgeek.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=51).

Matty
01-11-2008, 08:58 PM
Okay I understand now.
1. So does http://www.m-software.de/ constantly update site thumbnails/screenshots..
2. Or do they manually update..
3. Or is it simply a case of if they don't have it they never will?

The Geek
01-11-2008, 11:27 PM
Hope you don't mind me butting in... just popped in for a second to see how things are going for you all.

Most providers will actually run as a service meaning that the snapshot will occur at the time the 'link' is submitted (though some services will cache that snapshot for a period of time). The snap module will fetch the image from the service (if the service returns one) and then save it as a new header image (as if you took the screen yourself and uploaded it as a new header image). This avoids the overhead of fetching a new image every time.

Remember that not all services will always return a valid image (hence the important reason for the default image). Most services I found did not return valid images of sub-domains or specific pages/folders... only the home page.

Even though it is off-topic, I just wanted to say to Morgan to keep up the phenomenal work, I don't think I could have wished for a more capable, dedicated and talented coder to take things over.

It has happened again... I couldn't read your comment until i clicked "Quote" :eek:

But i was asking that if i changed the link to the domaintools one would it work collecting the thumbnail..

How would i translate that into the snap.php file? (precisionforums being the thumbnail the link is for.)

Don't want to repeat myself, but like I said, if you want to change the link, you'd need to edit the /display/snap.php file. Look for the A HREF tag and set the link to what you want.

Morgan, is this compatible with Apache 2/FreeBSD6.2? When I set a forum to be the Link directory all I get is a directory listing, not the form I would expect. I'm running vB 3.6.7.

Morgan
01-21-2008, 04:36 PM
Wouldn't think OS would have any effect, probably something else is up. Go to the link directory type and double check the sets in use. Also go to the link directory module set and see whether Snap, User Ratings, Table of contents, Tools, Featured Items, or whatever modules you want to appear have been added. Then click the module links when in the module set and make sure the settings are as you prefer.

ND4SPD

Everything looks normal except for an error I get when I try to go to add_link.php. It gives me errors on line 54 & 74 of my functions.php file.

Line 54: $res = mysql_query($string);
Line 74: return mysql_fetch_row($resource);

Why would it have trouble querying my database?

EDIT: I think this is probably related to an upgrade my hosting provider did recently. I've opened a trouble ticket with them, hopefully they can resolve it.

One question. Anyone got an idea what mod's I would have to do to include parts of 3.7 in with GARS (specifically the tagging option)? Doesn't seem to appear when I'm adding a link to the directory.

Hello!

I can not still solve the problem of not showing thumbnails.

In the thred of Link Directory for GARS 2.0, I found zendiver wrote following:

I hope this helps some others that have had the same problem I and quite a few others have had with the thumbnailer. The one listed in the Readme file - http://www.m-software.de/screenshot/Screenshot.png?url= has never worked for me, it may or may not work for you; however, I have gotten these to work on ver3.6.8 PL2

http://open.thumbshots.org/image.pxf?url=
http://livethumb.de/?url=
http://image.picoshot.com/thumbnail.php?url=

When I try to add new link, it turns white blank page,

Now I follow the advice of zendiver and chnage url to
http://www.artviper.net/screenshots/screener.php?&url

A little change has occured.
When I tried to add new page, no white page, but
get error message that the link to the image is invalid.

Uhmm.

Can somone give me any advice what I should do to make my link

Nevermind I figured it out......first my default image path in setting was wrong( i had changed servers and it was the old path stored in GARS....

Second, I used the pico server and they require your extention to be JPEG, not jpg or png....

everything works great now.....

Pico server seems to be returning *really* small thumbs? Is there a way to specify the image size? It seems like there used to be something (in the snap.php module maybe?) that controlled the display size of the images and now they are all showing up as tiny thumbs?

I get the same errors as well..
tried to re-upload, checked all setting etc. but still no luck. :(
Any suggestions??

Edit: Changed the "FULL URL to your default images folder" to the full URL now (it was ./geek/gars/images before), and I just get a blank page when I try to add a new link.
The thumbnail is correctly added to the geek/gars/images/1/ folder...

I get a "HTTP Error 500 - Internal server error" on the blank page when I change to the Full URL (thumbnail created correctly), but I get the error below if I use "./geek/gars/images" (but no thumbnail created then)...
1. There was an error encountered with your upload:

* This is not a valid image file.
2. Error1 generating image

Note sure about the internal server error. Try turning display_errors on in PHP and/or look at your server error log to see if there is an additional clue. For 'Imageinfo Failed' vB isn't able to verify that the file is truly an image file, so check that you have 777 permissions on the directory that holds new uploads.

Ok.

I got my old forum migrated to VB.

I created a forum called "Links Directory"

I followed the direction to add the links directory module the best I could. When I went back to the forum to submit a test post I got this message...

The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
http://www.m-software.de/screenshot/Screenshot.png?url=http://www.mysite.com is invalid

It doesnt matter what URL I put in. I get the same error. What is the problem?
Here is my site: http://www.wv-music.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=27

How do I ajust the width of the links directory. When I have a fluid style selected it looks ok until i make the explorer window smaller. When I have a fixed style selected it is just all out of wack.

Thnx.

Morgan

Check that http://www.m-software.de/screenshot/Screenshot.png?url= is the entry in the Snap settings via the ACP, and then when making a post, enter http://www.mysite.com as the link. Also check that you have PHP configured with allow_url_fopen set to on; otherwise the call to grab the thumbnail will fail. Note that if no thumbnail exists at http://www.m-software.de/ then the default thumbnail will show.

As to the page design, that forum is not open to guests, so I cannot see to what you refer, but you can go to the vB ACP -> vBulletin Options -> General Settings -> Add Template Name in HTML Comments -> Yes -> Save and then look at the HTML source of the page to see what templates are being used for various parts of the page.

Hello,

When I submit a new link to my link directory I get the default image. so when I try and edit it to update the thumbnail and then try and save I get the following error message?

1. There was an error encountered with your upload:

* This is not a valid image file.
2. Error1 generating image

Any help?

Thanks, Paul.

Check that you have PHP configured with allow_url_fopen set to on, that all the GARS ACP settings in the 'Header images' box are correct, and that you have 777 permissions on the GARS images directory.

Try reimporting the XML from this add-on with 'Import the phrases and templates only' set to yes, and check whether 'Link Directory' is the term set under ACP -> GARS -> Types.

Morgan

"Unable to add cookies, header already sent" means that some text or whitespace is output to the browser before cookies are sent to the browser, so you need to find where that is happening and remove it.

echo "<br /><strong>Warning</strong>: $errstr in <strong>$errfile</strong> on line <strong>$errline</strong><br />";

The thumbnail doesn't link. It is the 'www' button that links. Example (http://www.thevbgeek.com/showthread.php?t=3425). Check that you are using Link Directory for the Template Sets in the ACP -> GARS -> Types -> click the link directory type. Also check that you are using GARS_link_threadbit in the ACP -> GARS -> Templates -> Link Directory -> threadbit box.

Please don't double post. It doesn't make me answer any faster. Thanks. As to your question, posts to the link directory don't show the upload box, as the link directory add-on fetches the thumbnail for you from whatever thumbnail service provider you use. If no thumbnail is available, then the default image is used.

daisukem
06-16-2008, 10:14 PM
Morgan. I'm sorry for the double posts.

I contacted my webhosting if they can turn on "allow_url_fopen", the answer was unfortunately no due to security. I contacted Brian if his product 'vBa link directory' uses the same way to generate thumbnails from thumbshots. He explained as follows.

vBa Links does not use fopen() to call the thumbnails, so there should not be any way that you would have that problem.

So I would like to know what could be an alternative way to generate thumbnails as I can't turn on the function on my server.

Also it would be handy to know how I can upload a custom image for header for links if method above fails.

Thanks morgan.

1: Untested but you might try editing the code to use cURL (http://www.php.net/cURL) instead, near the following in the /mods/persist/snap.php file:

if (!($handle = @fopen(unhtmlspecialchars($location), 'rb')))
{
$errors[] = $location . " is invalid";
}

2: Untested but you might try switching the true to false and the false to true in the /mods/edit/snap.php file.

This add-on is not marked as supported, and there is currently no cURL option that comes with this add-on. PHP settings required:

allow_url_fopen = on
safe_mode = off

Not every host allows those PHP settings.

After much searching I think I may have found the answer I am after - GARS - kudos on good work.

Quick question about the link directory - is it possible (I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere) to manage PAID links? i.e. user submits link and pays via paypal before link is valid?

Morgan

Nothing like that, though you could set up a vB subscription whereby once someone makes payment, s/he is moved to a usergroup that can post in the paid links forum.

Hi, just bought this mod and having a play about. :)

When I submit a link, then look at the new thread, there is no link shown to the website. If you put a link in the description then there would be a link but I was hoping there would be a direct link, maybe in a module, that would point to the site.

I've probably missed it, there's a lot to take in. Can anyone help please?

Thanks :)

EDIT:

Some more info that might help...I'm having problems getting home.gif icon to show which is a direct link to the site. I hope that's easier to understand lol. I have the web address module displayed but it's only text that is in it, not an actual link. I've read a few pages back about a similar problem but still can't seem to fix it. :(

2nd Edit:

I've now enabled "parse BBCode"in the custom field settings and it shows as a link instead of text which is a step in the right direction. But still no www button. And I do have the forums/images/buttons/home.gif file on the server.

3rd Edit:

All fixed. All I did was go into the Snap settings and save it, didn't change anything, just saved it. Now another module is coming up with the WWW in it.

Hehehe... :)

I've worked it out. It's a new forum and I don't have any moderators yet. I've added myself to the moderators usergroup as a secondary usergroup and the threads are now being moderated.

I guess since there were no mods before it didn't go into the mod queue.

vBulletin 3.7.1
GARS 2.1.8
link_directory 218m

It used be working propery for short time.
After upgrading GARS  and module,
I got this trouble for almost half a year....

1. When post as new thread,
no error message, but the image is always "default.jpg".

2. Editing a thread adn save it, then, I always get this
message. :

Error2 generating image

And the image is over written to "default.jpg".

Please advice!

Make sure the server path in the GARS setting is correct, that PHP is set with both allow_url_fopen to on and safe_mode to off, and that the /geek/gars/images directory and all sub-directories in that directory have 777 permissions.

June

Thank you for answer.

I checked all the point.

The server path in the GARS setting is correct.
PHP is set with both allow_url_fopen to on and safe_mode to off.

About the 777,
I found following.

When I set all the folders to 777, then I got the following messsage;

1. here was an error encountered with your upload:

* This is not a valid image file.

2. Error1 generating image

When I set folders to 755, I only get this message;

1. Error1 generating image

Anyway, I still in the trouble and very happy if you give me any advice.

Morgan
08-21-2008, 10:58 PM
The image directories should have 777 permissions. Go to the ACP -> GARS -> Modules -> click the module set -> click the Snap link and check that the settings are correct. Assuming you meet the PHP requirements for this add-on, the information you enter in the Snap settings need to match that of thumbshots.org so you'll need to check that. Otherwise, try a different thumb service provider. Some alternatives are listed here (http://www.thevbgeek.com/showpost.php?p=22712&postcount=373).

Morgan

Not sure what else to suggest that hasn't already been suggested. If everything is set correctly, you meet the PHP requirements, and the thumb service provider you use has a screenshot/thumbnail of the website, it'll appear like this (http://www.thevbgeek.com/showthread.php?t=4553).

Not sure if this was already covered, but I had an issue with thumbs not appearing for sites I was adding..... it seems to be, at least if you are using http://www.m-software.de/screenshot/Screenshot.png?url= as the service provider, if it does not already have a thumb of the requested site you may not get a thumb back on the first request. I tested it by putting that address in my browser and putting in a site. The first time it did not return an image. Then when I retried it did return the image. I tried it on a few sites to verify. So maybe alternate thumb provider would be the way to go.

Is there anyway to suppress the large text area in the post? I'd prefer to use the custom fields only.

Look at the GARS_pb template and then design your own customized postbit template to be used for the 'First post in showthread' template in the template set assigned to the type used in that forum.

Okay I think I get what you are saying but what am I looking for in the GARS_pb template that represents the large text area? I don't see any form elements.

Not sure what you mean by "large text area" but to find the area just add in the word test to the template and then see where it appears on screen.

I'm in the same boat and I primarily bought GARS for this feature.

All I did when I got that error was go to AdminCP/GARS/modules/Link Directory Module Set,
Click on the 'Snap' (over on the right) and where you see 'Extension of thumbnails created by thumb service' alter the .png to .jpg
Worked for me!

Well I thought I had it working. I rolled back to GARS 2.18 followed all the instructions made a test post and it actually posted (this was not possible with GARS 2.19) though I still did not get a preview. However when I tried to edit the same post I ended up getting the the same errors.

1. There was an error encountered with your upload:

* This is not a valid image file.
2. Error1 generating image

As this site is running the latest version of GARS and this add-on, please make a test (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51) here and then edit it to see if you get the same error message. Note that if the thumbnail provider does not have a thumbnail/screenshot of the site, the default image will appear.

Yes the test does work HERE. But for the rest of us this addon does not work. Perhaps some constructive support would help. Is there a debug mode?

As listed in the release post, this add-on is not supported, though I have already given every explanation I can think of as to why thumbnails do not show, so the only other thing I can suggest to you is to take another read through the thread, check whether you can upload images to GARS via a custom field, make sure you meet the PHP requirements listed in the release post, verify that the absolute path to GARS images folder has 777 permissions, and/or try a different thumb service provider by editing the Snap Settings via the ACP -> GARS -> Modules -> click a module set -> click the Snap link.

We are so thankful to the person who made this add-on feature and it works great except for just one thing... the thumbnails. I've tried every service provider, went through the instructions about 10 times, step by step, but it still doesn't work.

Let me add... we are so thankful for the person who made this. It's just that some little step must be missing from the instructions, because it's just not working with the thumbnails.

If you are getting the default thumbnail, then the thumb service provider does not have a thumbnail for that site, so you might try a different thumb service provider. The first post has a link to alternative thumb service providers.

Mine didn't work on the default provider. I switched to snapcasa and it works well. However if snapcasa doesn't have a thumbnail for the site, it queues it and returns a 'request has been queued' image, which then becomes your thumbnail.

Is this compatible with vb 3.8 and is it CSRF protected? Also, what about exploit and bug fixes?

This site is using this add-on and vB 3.8.

Demo: http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51

There are no known exploits or bugs with this add-on.

What URL code are you using? I cannot get this to work. It used to work with LiveThumbs, but their service appears to be down. I have tried every combination I can think of and still get the dreaded:
1. There was an error encountered with your upload:

* This is not a valid image file.
2. Error1 generating image

At this point, you cannot even post a new link, which makes it a broken module altogether. This module is not supported, therefore I am going to purchase vBadvanced's Link Directory if I cannot get this to function again soon.

I had been concentrating on the IMAGES folder and it's sub-folders. It appears to work again using an account with SNAPCASA.

If somebody has errors like "Error2" or anything with snap.php on line 88 my solution was to change the thumbs provider.
Working fine is now
